As children my sister and I would ride our bikes a few blocks to a bridge overlooking a river. We would catch little crayfish by tying liver on a string. Often perched above us was a belted kingfisher steadily surveying the water for a fish. When she found one she would plunge headfirst to grab it! How exciting was that? Kingfishers have powder blue feathers when seen at the right angle of light. Their presence becomes apparent to me either by site or by hearing their rattling call. I describe the call as a mini machine gun firing. They can be difficult to photograph because they’re so very cautious and on the go. I love this bird because of their high energy, persistence and beauty. The female is the one with the fancy red belt and is prettier than her male counterpart. Nice for once, as it is usually the male who is prettier in most of the bird world!
