Although they are very shy, you may have the fortunate opportunity of finding these birds in their natural habitat of the coastal regions of the Southeastern United States. If you get the chance to see a male painted bunting flying toward you, at first glance it appears brown, until suddenly when it perches, you realize you have a rainbow of feathers sitting in front of you. The female is also very beautiful and is North America’s only true green bird. I photographed this pair in my backyard – yeahhhh! Unfortunately, due to their vivid plumage, these birds are often illegally caught and sold as caged birds. Between the decrease of natural habitat and trappers hunting them for profit, the species has dwindled by more than 60% and they are listed as a Near Threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
